Innovation at the edge of the network, especially in the way we manage increasingly critical edge IT resources and infrastructure, a changing workforce and the challenges that presents, increased interest in standardization, and advanced approaches to power and cooling are among the data center trends* a global team of Vertiv experts identified as areas of activity in 2019.
The focus on the edge is no surprise. Cisco Visual Networking Index estimates global IP traffic will almost triple by 2021, with the number of connected devices eventually almost tripling. That’s an additional 23 billion connected devices in just three years.
That’s a lot to ask of a centralized IT infrastructure, and the challenge will become more daunting as the next wave of edge-reliant applications become more mainstream – things like virtual and augmented reality, autonomous vehicles, and widespread IoT implementation. All require storage and compute closer to the users and devices, and that presents tremendous challenges related to latency, bandwidth, availability and security.
Make no mistake: These edge deployments are becoming mission critical facilities, with the same infrastructure requirements as a traditional data center. The difference, and it is significant, is edge facilities are scattered around the globe and usually lack on-site IT personnel. Organizations are dealing with the distributed nature of edge computing by relying on more intelligent IT and infrastructure systems that deliver remote visibility and control. There already is considerable activity in this space, and it will only accelerate in 2019.
The goal is to enable a more sophisticated network edge while simultaneously simplifying these complex environments for the men and women who manage them. This is going to happen with cloud-based platforms that can convert massive amounts of data generated at the edge into actionable knowledge. The result will be more robust, efficient edge deployments with enhanced visibility and self-healing capabilities requiring limited active management.
This shift toward the edge is creating ripples across the data center space, which leads us to our second 2019 trend…
