Any of these terms can easily apply to Jan Oblak who plays for Atlético Madrid and the Slovenia national team, David DeGea from Manchester United or Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea—arguably among the three best soccer goalies in the world. Their traits have captivated soccer fans across the globe. You can’t help but admire Thibaut Courtois’ incredible efficiency, minute after minute and game after game as he has proven to be a centre-back’s dream. And solidifying their top positions are David De Gea’s flexibility to perform gravity defying saves or Jan Oblak’s display of longevity—brilliant shot stopping—at the expense of others who seem to be declining in performance.

Distilling these top soccer goalie traits down to their least common denominators, we find efficiency, flexibility, and longevity are the dominant traits. Who among data center operators can argue that these are the same traits they seek from their facilities?

From the world’s largest data centers such as the Citadel in Reno, Nevada, Facebook’s Prineville in Oregon or NSA’s Bluffdale in Utah, mission-critical facility designers have gone to extreme lengths to ensure their data centers exhibit these goalie-like traits. And some data centers have even gone into the bizarre zone to achieve their efficiency goals… yes, pun intended. Consider the Switzerland-based SIAG Secure Infostore that operates two data centers under the Swiss Alps from former military bunkers or Microsoft’s prototype of a portable mini data center that was submerged 30 feet off the California coast in 2015.

For data center managers looking to establish the most flexible, efficient and dynamic facilities, they don’t need to be sitting miles underground or fathoms under water, but they should seek today’s options that provide these goalie-like benefits, that have proven to be winning combinations for their soccer teams.
